One approved approach for minimizing the long-termrnhazards posed by space debris is to reenter spacernhardware into the atmosphere at end-of-mission or tornplace hardware in an orbit with a relatively shortrnlifetime. Selection of a short lifetime orbit vice arndeorbited reentry into a safe area depends on predictionsrnof the hazards posed by random reentry of the object. Ifrnthe object is left in orbit, what is the casualtyrnexpectation associated with its eventual reentry?rnClearly, having high confidence in reentry hazardrnprediction tools is important to this decision-makingrnprocess and the final choice can have significantrnmission and cost impacts. This paper describes a set ofrntest cases that can be used to validate reentry hazardrnmodels. The test cases were assembled from reentryrncases where “known” and tracked objects reentered thernatmosphere and debris from the reentries wasrnsubsequently found on the ground and was analyzed.rnThe test cases include best estimates of the state, massrnproperties, and physical description of each object priorrnto reentry, the wind profile through which the debris fellrn(for one case), and the impact location and physicalrndescription of each surviving object. The report alsornsummarizes results of metallurgical analyses conductedrnon surviving debris, which places limits on thernmaximum temperatures reached during reentry. Detailsrnon a specific reentry are included as an example.
