Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) once caused great trouble to people's life, while Chinese medicinal herbs exerted an important effect in fighting it. Here, we studied the influence of herbs from the project pronounced by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of People's Republic of China on cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity, which had close relationship with inflammation. Cyclic AMP as the substrate, the reaction was started by adding the herbal aqueous extract and cyclic AMP PDE, then cyclic AMP level was examined with HPLC, and the inhibition ratios of herbs on cyclic AMP PDE activity were also measured. The inhibition ratios of those five prescriptions on cyclic AMP PDE activity were more than 60%, and of the other sevens in 26 herbs were beyond 50%. In conclusion, the cyclic AMP PDE activity can significantly be inhibited by prescriptions (except prescription 1) and some herbs in vitro, which shows the prescriptions exert anti-inflammation possibly through the inhibition of cyclic AMP PDE activity.
