摘要

Hematophagous ectoparasites and the infectious agents they transmit are of vast medical and veterinary public health importance. Control of both vectors and infectious agents is challenging due to insecticide/acaricide resistance, drug resistance, and the lack of vaccines or effective drugs for many vector-borne infectious agents. Interest in vaccine-based control of hematophagous arthropods and vector-blocking vaccines to prevent pathogen transmission continues to increase. Identification, isolation, and characterization of candidate immunogens by standard biochemical methods are highly effective approaches, but they are relatively slow and labor intensive processes. Combining genomic, especially expressed sequence tags, and proteomic approaches provides promising alternative methods for identification of vaccine candidates that complement the more traditional approaches. Increasingly, interest is being focused on pharmacologically active molecules essential for successful blood-feeding and/or pathogen transmission as candidate immunogens for novel vaccines.
