摘要

Significant increases in the costs of researching, developing and maintaining crop protection chemicals in the market place have contributed to major consolidation in the crop protection industry. The June 2002 acquisition of Aventis CropScience by Bayer to form Bayer CropScience is a recent example of this industry trend. Advances in agriculture continue to make tremendous contributions to improving human health, nutrition and quality of life around the world. Modern plant breeding, improved agronomy and the development of inorganic fertilizers and synthetic pesticides lead these advances. Pesticides used in public health programs have also saved millions of human lives from disease by controlling insects or rodent vectors and intermediate hosts. While 24 million American workers (17% of workforce) are involved in the production, processing and selling of the nation's food and fiber, high technology agriculture has led to significantly fewer workers being actively engaged in farming. Thus many consumers have lost touch with the complexity of farming and see little benefit from the use of pesticides. Activist groups and some sections of the media increasingly advocate banning or removing even the slightest traces of synthetic chemicals, such as approved pesticides or food additives. These scientifically and socially unwarranted efforts for a pesticide-free environment divert consumer attention away from the very real public-health goal of increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables. Such distortion of health risks threaten innovation, jobs and our nation's enviable high standard of living, and often divert critical resources needed to address proven health risks. The scientific community and agricultural industry must actively explore ways to partner with grower groups, other members of the food chain and recognized medical experts to better educate consumers and policy makers on distinguishing between known and hypothetical risks.
