The growth conditions of single crystals of the new double tungstate of sodium and aluminum, NaAl(WO_4)_2 have been investigated. Data have been obtained on the concentration and temperature regions of crystallization of this compound in the system Na_2O-Al_2O_3-WO_3. Nontsoichiometric high-temperature solutions with very low crystallization temperatures, low viscosity and absence of volatility have been found and used for growing pure and differently Cr~(3+)-doped single crystals of NaAl(WO_4)_2 by the top seeded solution growth (TSSG) slow cooling. technique. The main defects of the crystals obtained have been established, the reasons for their appearance analysed and single crystals free from inclusions were grown. Measurements of the optical characteristics of samples with chromium concentrations in the range 1.4× 10~(19)-1.3× 10~(20) atoms/cm~3 were carried out. Absorption and luminescence spectra of Cr~(3+): NaAl(WO_4)_2 were obtained at temperatures between 6 and 300 K and the temperature dependence of the Cr~(3+) luminescence lifetime was established. The Dq/B value found indicates that Cr~(3+):NaAl(WO_4)_2 belongs to the intermediate field site crystals. The results show that the new crystal is a good candidate for broadband laser applications.
