The aim of this research is to develop an integrated methodology for the design of material handling systems in the AGV-based FMS.The design process for material handling systems of the FMS includes machine layout design,the design of AGV flowpath and the determination of the optimum number of AGV.A multi-chromosome genetic algorithm is used to optimze machine layout and AGV flowpath design simultaneously.A new genetic operator is developed to ensure that the genetic search is convergent to an optimum solution.Simulation is then used to determine the optimum number of AGV in the system.A case study is presented to demonstrate the capability of the system to solve a non-trivial FMS design problem.
