The Influence of Land Management on Soil Erosion from Buzau Hillock Area

The arable lands on the slopes in the hillock area of the Buzau county are subject to a continuos erosion degradation, especially because of the aggressiveness of the pouring rains and the inclination of the slopes. The processes become more and more augumented from a year to another., becoming an alarming problem by practicing the monoculture maize crops. Out of the experimental data obtained at the stationary for controlling soil erosion in Aldeni, the district of Buzau, an alarming rhythm of degradation of arable grounds was observed. These grounds are located on sloping fields (the inclining percentage of the slopes is between 15-20%) cultivated with grain maize in monoculture.The degradation is caused by strong erosions produced by torrential rainfalls which wash away, every year, an amount of 24-26 tones/hectare of fertile soil ( an average value on a period of 15 years). The rhythm of degradation brings about the change of black soil and heron to levels of highly and very highly eroded soils, in a period of 18-20 years. The degradation processes contributes to the decrease of the agricultural production evaluated around 40 euro/hectare on black soil and 70-75 euro on heron. If in similar conditions of soil slope and culture we apply the anti-erosion system of "cultivations on grassy strips", the amount of fertile soil washed away is reduced every year, to an average of 6-7t/hectare. By applying the anti-erosion system suggested, the erosion is reduced to a normal level ( around 6t/hectare and year) and the productive qualities of the soil are maintained, while the costs of creating the grassy strips care be reimbursed out of the additional agricultural productions that are obtained in no more than 2 years of breeding.
