Silicon carbide offers high stiffness, light weight, high hardness, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, high wear resistance, and high corrosion resistance at room as well as elevated temperatures. Hence it is used in applications such as armor, industrial wear components, chemical processing, mining, and semiconductor processing. With the above attributes, porous SiC can be used in applications such as filters (diesel paniculate, coal, oil, gas, separation membranes), catalyst supports, substrates, sensors (relative humidity, NH3) etc. In this study, porous SiC was made by two processes, reaction bonding and pressureless sintering. Process variables such as raw materials, infiltration approach, temperature, time, etc. were systematically varied. Microstructure, porosity content, pore size distribution, average pore size, and permeability of the resultant materials were characterized. The ability to make parts with a combination of micro-porosity and macro porosity (channels) was demonstrated.
