Genomic in situ hybridization was used to investigate the genomic structure of Gasteria lutzii x Aloe aristata F1 hybrid and Gasteria lutzii x ( Gasteria lutzii x Aloe aristata) backcrosses. GISH clearly distinguished all chromosomes of both parental genomes in the F1 hybrid and demonstrated numerous genomic recombinations in chromosomes transmitted by the F1 to the backcross progeny. The frequency of recombination points on mitotic chromosomes of back-cross progeny was higher than the value expected from chiasma frequency in orcein - stained metaphase I of the F1 plant.
