During the twentieth century, more than fifty uranium-radium mines have been exploited in Portugal. The majority of these mine sites are still in need of remediation, thus risking human health and other living beings due to the potential problems that this heavy metal might bring to ecosystems. This paper focuses on the possibility of cleaning uranium contaminated waters with vegetable species to a point where the concentrations drop to safe levels for agriculture.rnWater contaminated with uranium, with a composition similar to that of an artesian well from a farm of Seixo da Beira (Oliveira do Hospital, centre of Portugal), was used in a laboratory study. The project consisted in analysing the response of three plant species (Elodea Canadensis, Callitriche Brutea and Lemna gibba), which were collected in the stream of Anca (near Coimbra), to water contaminated with uranium. The objective was to verify which plant would show a better performance in removing uranium from the water. Following this phase, a laboratorial simulation, in a constructed wetland, was set up with the best species. The prototype wetland was filled with the uranium accumulator plant species and the concentration levels were monitored. Two irrigation tests were simulated by removing part of the water and then the prototype was refilled with new contaminated water. The goal was to reach acceptable uranium concentrations, in the water, before each irrigation episode. The results obtained in the laboratory tests were satisfactory, and the plants have shown good ability to accumulate uranium. In the second test it was possible to achieve the desired results, namely the levels of uranium in the out flowing water were below the maximum allowable values recommended by EPA for irrigation.
