The design of the emergency ventilation system for rail tunnels is usually based on arnrestricted number of critical scenarios, leading to a ventilation system designed for thesernspecific cases. The question is, what is a reasonable design scenario, and what is thernadequate ventilation system which has a good performance in the vast majority of firernscenarios.rnThe performance of a ventilation system in scenarios more and less critical than thernoriginal design scenario should be assessed by a scenario analysis with a fast, easyrnapplicable simulation tool.rnThe event tree analysis methodology allows to assign values for the probability of therndifferent scenarios. By that, a well founded evaluation of the optimal, reasonablernventilation design can be worked out.
