The sensor is a low power, low probability of intercept (LPI) radar, operating at a relatively low frequency and using small, broad beam, non scanning antennas. It will provide terrain avoidance, point obstacle avoidance and warning against controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) with good penetration of rain, fog, smoke and dust. It will also detect, recognize, and display wires with their ranges and orientations. The sensor uses Doppler spectrum analysis to generate a set of Doppler filters, representing, each, two conical surfaces. The conical surfaces intersect with range spheres, resulting in a division of the terrain into a large number of range-Doppler cells. The azimuth of each cell is measured using a conventional direction finding scheme. The elevation angle of the cell or obstacle is calculated using its azimuth and the head angle of the relevant cone. Based on the three coordinates obtained for each cell, a 3D map or a set of contours can be generated and displayed. Wires are detected and recognized using their unique radar backscatter characteristics at low frequency.
