Airframe-mounted tuned absorbers, commonly used in helicopters for vibration suppression, have the drawbacks of high weight and RPM sensitivity. Active vibration control (AVC) can achieve vibration levels comparable to passive absorbers with less weight because AVC utilizes multiple vibration sensors and force-generating actuators working in concert to directly impact global vibration levels. Conversely, passive absorbers react independently in response to local vibration, and only achieve global vibration reduction as an indirect effect. Furthermore, AVC systems can be designed to be insensitive to rotor speed variation without a significant weight penalty. A flight test was performed during 2001-2002 on a UH-60L with Growth Rotor Blades to determine the best actuator locations and force requirements for an AVC system destined for the service-life-extended Black Hawk helicopter designated the UH-60M. Multiple actuator configurations were flown with varying weight and center of gravity configurations over a wide range of flight conditions. The flight test confirmed that installing three actively controlled force generators in locations currently occupied by passive absorbers is sufficient to achieve the same vibration as the passive system, but with significantly less weight. Furthermore, the flight test demonstrated the superior performance of the AVC system for rotor speeds different than nominal.
