摘要

With the Army's increased emphasis on unmanned vehicles through FCS and the Objective Force, the U.S. Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) at Ft. Eustis, Virginia is developing the relationship between man and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). While manned/unmanned teaming is the desired outcome, the human-intensive and computing requirements for UAV management must be simplified. Further development is needed to permit multiple, diverse unmanned vehicles to interact as effective teammates. Today's coupling of UAVs with aviation assets provides a grouping of these entities, where UAVs are far less capable than the manned vehicles that manage them, and each platform performs a separate, sometimes divergent task. To be successful, manned/unmanned coupling must permit UAVs and manned assets to team, or operate with a common goal. This can only be accomplished with intelligent autonomy, supported by situation awareness and collaboration technologies for both UAVs and manned systems―areas Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) is developing.
