The problem of interest is how heading reversal maneuvers should be performed by combat aircraft in a time-optimal manner. The focus of this study is the relationship between the singular points and other structural properties of an aircraft model, and the flight mechanics of a time-optimal trajectory. For some heading reversal maneuvers, the singular points seem to behave as "attractors" of extremal trajectories. This understanding can help in establishing an initial guess when solving for extremal trajectories numerically. The optimal control problem is cast into a finite dimensional nonlinear parameter-optimization problem. Two trajectories are obtained, in which the dynamics evolves in such a way that the state approaches a singular point, and an expeditious heading reversal is facilitated.
