Since its deployment the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has experienced two gyro failures and one anomaly. A new safemode, Zero-Gyro, Zero-Wheel (ZGZW) safemode is proposed, this safemode is designed to ensure a power positive state in case of concurrent gyro and reaction wheel failure. The control law provides for initial sun capture, nutation damping and pointing control, without the use of Rate Gyro Assembly (RGA) and Reaction Wheel Assembly (RWA). The controller's stability and performance are validated through a simulation. This paper presents an overview of the ZGZW algorithm, control system design, and the simulation results.
