Research and Progress in Laser Welding of Zinc-coated Steel Sheets

Zinc-coated steel is a popular material in automotive body manufacturing owing to its good corrosion resistance, strength and excellent formability. Laser welding is an attractive process because of its high welding speed, deep penetration and high weld quality. However, laser welding of zinc-coated steels in gap-free lap joint configuration is still a challenging task in the automotive industry due to the vaporization of zinc at 906℃. The high pressurized zinc vapor causes undesirable high porosity and spatters. This problem is more prominent in gap-free lap welds which are commonly used in automotive sheet metal welding. In this article, an overview of research and progress in laser welding of zinc-coated steel sheets is given. Then the recent achievements in welding of zinc-coated steel sheets at the Center for Laser-aided Manufacturing at SMU are reported.
