Pitting Corrosion Resistance of Type 2507 Duplex Stainless Steel in Synthetic Seawater and Hydraulic Fluids

Type 2507 duplex stainless steel has been widely used as umbilical material in offshore oil and gas production due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high fatigue property. However, high-temperature service environments can degrade its localized corrosion resistance, leading to the premature failure of umbilical tubes. In this paper, pitting corrosion resistance of non-welded and welded 2507 duplex tubes in synthetic seawater and two hydraulic fluids was investigated using electrochemical methods, including potentiostatic polarization and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization. The potentiostatic polarization tests showed that the critical pitting temperature (CPT) values for the non-welded and welded 2507 duplex tubes in synthetic seawater were 86℃ and 53℃, respectively. The 2507 duplex tubes exhibited CPT values greater than 60℃ in the hydraulic fluids, with lower CPT values for hydraulic fluid containing low ethylene glycol. The cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the difference between repassivation potential and corrosion potential for the welded 2507 duplex tubes in aerated synthetic seawater was greater than 256 mV at temperatures above the CPT.
