Corrosion in Biodiesel Production Process Using High Free Fatty Acid Feedstock

This work aims at investigating corrosiveness of an acid-catalyzed esterification reactor for biodiesel production from low quality feedstock containing high free fatty acid contents. The corrosion investigation was carried out using both electrochemical and weight loss immersion techniques for short-term (3~4 hours) and long-term (up to 7 weeks) exposure tests, respectively. The tested solution was synthesized to simulate the product resulting from biodiesel conversion, which was done by mixing canola oil, oleic acid, methanol and sulphuric acid. The methanol to oil molar ratio ranged from 10:1 to 25:1, and the sulphuric acid concentration was varied from 1 to 5 % by wt of oil. The tested solution was kept at 65℃, and stirred with a rotating speed of 200-300 rpm. The results show that the acid-catalyzed esterification reactor was not corrosive due to the inhibitive nature of free fatty acids. The corrosion rates of carbon steel were low in the range of 0.30 mmpy in seventh week. Corrosion products were oily, loose and black, and only uniform corrosion was found on the carbon steel surface.
