Rare earth doped glasses were investigated and their excitation and emission spectra are reported. Energy transfer from Tb~(3+) to Eu~(3+), and from Dy~(3+) to Tb~(3+) and Eu~(3+) is observed. Through energy transfer, co-doped glasses can be excited under the blue light and emit colors complementary to blue that are needed to produce white light. The increase of blue absorption of host glasses increases the emission of the complementary colors from the glasses. Rare earth doped glasses are potential phosphors for white LEDs.
