Research on a new method of cleaning mill scale and rust from the interior of pipe prior to the application of internal polymeric coating has been undertaken. First, we present a brief description of the internal pipe coating process. Secondly, the overall project is described. This research work is to be performed in four phases. These phases are: cleaning characterization, cleaning effects on adhesion, plant application effects, and acid reclaim process. Finally, we present some preliminary results on the first phase, cleaning characterization. This phase is primarily a chemical reaction kinetics study and reactor modeling study. A suite of reactor models of this process is proposed. The experimental program is described. Preliminary experimental results will be presented. Reactor modeling and computational results for this phase are presented. Preliminary methods for the assessment of the process improvement will be formulated and presented.
