The net efficiency has been found to be larger for higher rank coals compared with lower rank coals. The reason why this is not clear. In conventional PC technology the difference is 8% (37% - 29%) and is 5% for CFBC (37% - 32%), 3% for SCPC (41% - 38%), 4% for PFBC (42% - 38%), 2% for IGCC (44% - 42%) ans 3% for APFBC (47% - 44%). Case studies are presented and some of the debottlenecking issues of a large thermal power plant are explored. The startup procedure of thermal power plant is detailed in one case study. Another case study from Pyropower details how to keep the plant in low loads.
