Several utilities are investigating the possibility of replacing plant I&C systems with digital-based systems due tornobsolescence of the existing analog I&C equipment, difficulty of obtaining replacement parts, increased maintenance costs,rnand difficulty in maintaining a qualified staff to service the original equipment. This paper discusses several of the areasrnthat must be addressed to successfully implement a digital upgrade. These areas include pedigree of the functional designrndocumentation of the system being upgraded; reverse engineering of the analog wiring diagrams if good functional designrndocumentation is not available; understanding the restraints imposed on the system by the interfacing systems;rnunderstanding the restraints imposed on the system by the plant licensing basis; and advisability of incorporating functionalrnupgrades concurrent with the system upgrade. Examples are provided to illustrate the applicability of each of these areas.
