Many regions of the country have seen their manufacturing base shrink due to global competition. As a tool to support the current industry base and help attract new business, the eastern North Carolina economic development community found that the small to mid sized manufacturers in the region required a more general, practice oriented engineer. To support this need, a BS in engineering was developed by East Carolina University. One of the desirable concentration areas identified by local industry and the economic development community was a concentration in Engineering Management. This paper discusses the selection process along with the educational approach that will be employed. It presents an industry perspective of engineering management as a desirable element for the next generation of BS graduates in engineering.
