The efficacy of various combinations of borate-, sulfur-, and phosphorus-containing additives in gear oil to form protective tribofilms on steel surfaces slid in the boundary lubrication regime was investigated experimentally. The formation of antiwear tribofilms and their tribochemical activity were analyzed in terms of coefficient of friction and contact voltage results obtained at temperatures in the range of 32-100 ℃ under conditions of constant speed and normal load. The antiwear performance of the blends was evaluated in light of wear rate calculations derived from surface profilometry measurements. Scanning electron microscopy studies were performed in order to determine the dominant wear mechanisms. The tribological performance of each blend and associated dominant wear mechanisms were found to be strongly dependent on the type of additive(s), tribofilm composition, and operational temperature. The results indicate that sulfide-dominated tribofilms produce lower friction, while borate- and phosphate-dominated tribofilms provide higher wear resistance.
