In general, the most important function of lubricants is to reduce wear, friction in moving machinery, and protect metal surfaces against oxidation. Due to stricter environmental control, it is required lubricant formulation with significantly lower or zero phosphorus content. For economical reasons, it is also preferred that the additive possesses other functional properties for improving the lubricating properties of the oil. In our study, a oil-soluble multifunctional ashless additive derivative of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole(DMTD) was synthesized in high yields. The antiwear and extreme pressure properties of the additiver in mineral base oil were evaluated by four ball tester, the antioxidation properties in ester lubricant were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thin film oxygen uptake test(TFOUT) and oxidation-corrosion tests. In the four ball test, the additive can obviously improve the load carrying and antiwear abilities of the base oil under certain conditions ,and better than zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDP), in the isothermal and temperature programmed DSC oxidation test and thin film oxygen uptake test, it can improve resistance of oil towards oxidation, and exhibits better antioxidation properties than commercial dithiocarbamate derivative or ZDDP antioxidants , in the oxidation-corrosion test, it can not only effectively reduce the increases in viscosity and acid number of ester base oil at elevated temperature, but also superiors to commercial arylamine and phenolic antioxidants in oxidation stabilities. Therefore, the novel compound is an effectively multifunctional lubricant additive.
