The rotary diesel fuel injection pump (RDFIP) provides an atomized fuel to the combustion chamber of an automobile engine assembly at high pressure. The wear between the plunger and plunger sleeve causes considerable decrease in injection pressure and the quantity of fuel to combustion chamber of an engine, which ultimately leads to failure of engine assembly. This research investigates the cause of failure particularly focusing on hydrodynamic lubrication of a six-grooved plunger pump (SGPP) and its comparison with non-failure case of a four-grooved plunger pump (FGPP). Comparison of computed shear stresses, dimensionless film thickness, dimensionless pressure, attitude angle, eccentricity ratio and dimensionless load has been carried out at variable pump speed for SGPP and FGPP. The analysis of designed and optimized radial clearance has also been carried out for both cases by varying radial clearance between the plunger and plunger sleeve of hydraulic head assembly of RDFIP. Finite difference method is used to solve the Reynolds equation in order to calculate the pressure distribution in a fluid film. Experiments have been carried out to determine parameters such as specific heat of diesel fuel, diesel fuel density, fuel inlet temperature, radial clearance, groove depth, plunger arc angle and groove length for SGPP and FGPP These experimentally determined parameters are then used Put abstract text here as input in our computer program to lend more confidence to our predicted results
