Corrosion detection uses straight beam ultrasonic testing in the initial investigation for corrosion. The minimum wall thickness is detected and reported. Corrosion detection does not place emphasis on the repeatability of the reading. A Corrosion monitoring program acquires a reading from the same location at a specified frequency and places great emphasis on its repeatability. Clients may depend on third digit accuracy in an ultrasonic monitoring program. They are often confused (who wouldn't?) when the thickness of the pipe increases, and tend to loose confidence in the inspection method or the technician's abilities to perform duties. This paper explores the variables that affect repeatability of ultrasonic corrosion readings.
