Nondestructive Detection of Alpha Inclusions in Titanium Alloys Using the PIPA Process

The presence of alpha inclusions in titanium alloys that are induced during casting is a critical problem that can result in catastrophic failure of aircraft utilizing titanium alloy structural and engine components when subjected to operational fatigue. As part of a National Science Foundation project, the ability of Photon Induced Positron Annihilation (PIPA) to identify alpha inclusions in titanium and to detect fatigue damage in the titanium that can cause the component to fail was evaluated. Results of these studies indicated that the PIPA technique is highly sensitive to changes in the atomic lattice structure of titanium alloys induced by alpha inclusions, fatigue damage, and to microstructural changes which suggest that alpha inclusions have been formed. The PIPA technology is suitable for alpha inclusion and fatigue damage detection measurements during initial titanium processing through the entire life of manufactured aircraft components. The high sensitivity of the PIPA process to alpha inclusions and fatigue damage provides a powerful nondestructive tool that is suitable for identifying and quantifying abnormal damage accumulation and can help to identify and characterize specific failure mechanisms, including assessing remaining component life. Use of PIPA or the more portable technologies for field inspection processes provides an accurate, nondestructive measurement basis for aircraft health management applications.
