The use of a high frequency, linear array imaging system to inspect for fatigue cracks in aircraft lap-joints is presented. The system produces images in real-time allowing inspectors to quickly and accurately identify rivet features and, if present, associated defects. The images can also be used to estimate crack length. The performance of this system was tested at the FAA/AANC test facility by participating in the inner-layer, blind POD study. Sixteen panels were imaged from the top (outside) surface of the bottom skin . The inspections of each panel (20 rivets) was accomplished in 120 to 150 seconds. This time includes a scan of all the sites with a return (confirmatory) inspection of those sites where calls had been made. Using this system, inspectors were able to detect cracks 0.040" in length at the 90/95% confidence level while maintaining a false-call rate of only 1.3 % (7/525). Only 3 rivets with actual defects were missed and these cracks were 0.028" in length or less.
