Urban population growth has been detrimental to ecosystem health because of the propensity of urban environments to generate a large quantity of waste products that enter the atmospheric and water environments in a relatively small area. As part of a larger project studying the urban environment, we used monitoring data and modeling results to estimate the pollutant loads to a coastal water body and to simulate the water quality response. In this paper we describe the development of a stormwater quality model and a receiving-water quality model and briefly discuss the application of the models to a coastal water body system to evaluate water quality management alternatives.
