Within the carbonate coastal rocks of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, the ground water contains a fresh-water lens, 10-30 meters thick that overlies salt water. Between the two fluids exist a mixing zone, or halocline, only a few meters thick. This research utilizes MOCDENS to model the groundwater system in the Yucatan, seeking to explain the thin fresh-water lens and thin mixing zone. The modeling results indicate that the thin mixing zone is due to 1) the high velocity of ground water in the Yucatan, ~2500m/yr, 2) the low ratio of transverse to longitudinal dispersivity, ~0.000001, and 3) to a lesser extent, the low ratio of vertical to horizontal permeability, ~0.001. Since the fresh-water lens is so thin, salt-water contamination due to overpumping is a concern, especially in light of the burgeoning tourist industry.
