CANMET Energy Technology Centre – Varennes and CIMCO Refrigeration (a Canadianrnmanufacturer) are collaborating on the demonstration of an innovative system for recreationalrncomplex ice rinks in Canada, which main objective is to reduce the total energy consumption asrnwell as refrigerant charge and leaks by approximately 50%. This in turn will decrease greenhouserngas (GHG) emissions of these buildings by about 50%.rnStrategies to reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions of these buildings include thernrecovery of 100% of the energy rejected at the condensers of the refrigeration system, thernintegration of the refrigeration system with the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systemrn(HVAC), and the adaptation of the refrigeration system to obtain maximum benefits from Canadianrnclimatic conditions by continuously adjusting the condensing temperature to minimize buildingrnenergy consumption.rnThe comparison of the new system with the current Refrigeration and HVAC systems led to anrnexpected reduction of GHG emissions of 76 000 ton CO2-e in year 2012 in Canada, assuming arnpenetration in 50% of the new installations.
