The first joint US-French ocean topography mission, TOPEX/ Poseidon, has been hugely successful in mapping global ocean circulation patterns, including most of what is known about the El Nino condition. The spacecraft and its Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) were designed for a primary mission of three years and an extended mission of five years. This paper summarizes the pointing performance, component operations and anomalies associated with attitude control of this satellite during its first ten years of on-or-bit life. Specific topics include details regarding long-term parameter trending, star tracker re-incarnation, autonomous maneuver development and testing, alternate attitude determination methods, contingency planning and response, operational changes for mission longevity, reaction wheel faults, and orbit maintenance strategies that significantly reduced propellant usage. The paper concludes with a description of the orbit transfer maneuvers that were conducted during late 2002 to shift the ground track for tandem operations with the JASON mission.
