By mastering the ability to sail forth and navigate the seas, people have expanded their wealth and knowledge throughout the ages. The ability to sail forth, however, was greatly aided by the invention of navigational tools. Today, we who work in centers of information dissemination are faced with a similar challenge---navigating through the sea of information that confronts us every day. Like the early sailors, who had only a few crude instruments to guide them on their journeys, we, too, have had little to guide us through our extensive database of knowledge. Although our destinations may not seem as exotic as the ancient ports-of-call, they are no less important in exploring knowledge and pushing back the frontiers of discovery.
