This paper investigates optical multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. Simple models for (1) the maximum number of degrees of freedom available for communication, and (2) the channel transmission effects are derived. These models are used to derive lower bounds on the bit error probability of the usual optical-fibre transmission methods: intensity modulation of uncoded on-off keying signals with direct detection. Application of these bounds to a realistic optical link is interpreted as optimum signal packing, in the sense of scheduling the transmission along the channels in order to minimize the bit error probability.
