A novel scheme, termed coded double space-time cooperation, is proposed for user cooperation in uplink wireless networks. Analysis through pair-wise error probability shows that the new scheme achieves a better diversity gain over all the existing schemes including repetition, coded cooperation, space-time cooperation, and coded space-time cooperation, on both fast and slow Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, on slow fading channels where user cooperation is most useful, the new scheme is capable of achieving a full diversity order of 4 and at least 3.5 dB gain over the existing schemes at a bit error rate of 10~(-6) for a short block size of 100 data bits.
