Spectral Efficiency of Relay Networks in the Power-Limited Regime

We characterize the power-bandwidth tradeoff in a fading Gaussian relay network. We consider a dense wireless network where a source terminal communicates with a destination terminal assisted by a large number of relay terminals using one-hop relaying. We focus on the case where the available power in the network to support a given source-destination link is limited, whereas the bandwidth resource is unconstrained. We analyze the interplay of rate, bandwidth and power over this network to realize energy efficient communication. Analogous to point-to-point and multi-user power-limited links, we prove that capacity of relay networks increases linearly with power in the wideband regime. Furthermore, for a large network with K relay terminals, we show that the achieved energy per bit in this regime tends to zero as K → ∞ and scales at best like 1/K. Finally, we investigate a special case for which the relay network energy efficiency achieves this scaling behavior.
