In this paper, we address the problem of pilot-less carrier frequency recovery for 8-VSB digital TV signal under multipath conditions. A closed-loop carrier recovery scheme is proposed that is robust to frequency selective multipath channels. The method is developed by minimizing the residual error associated with the BLUE (Best Linear Unbiased Estimator) channel estimator using training symbols. The channel is first estimated from the training symbols using the BLUE method without carrier knowledge. Then the residual error associated with the BLUE equations is minimized by adjusting the carrier compensation frequency. The accuracy can be improved by iterating between the BLUE channel estimate and the carrier compensation. Simulations are presented verifying that the residual error associated with an approximate BLUE channel estimation scheme is a good metric for carrier offset compensation.
