The Safety of Explosives Handling and Blasting in the Mining Industry

Due to their high amount of stored energy, explosives have been the cause of many seriousinjuries and fatalities over the last centuries. Despite safety advances and awareness in the lastdecades, injuries and fatalities continue to occur at mining operations due to blasting. Accordingto the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, from 1978 to 2001, blastingincidents claimed 106 lives and were responsible for over 1000 injuries in mines in the US. Themain causes of incidents found today are flyrock, blast area security and premature detonations.The concerted efforts of the mining and explosives industries and labour and governmentagencies have greatly improved the safety record of blasting in mines.Accident and fatality reports involving explosives were researched to determine the root causesof the accidents. The evolution of safety policies and procedures regarding explosivetransportation, storage, handling and disposal were explored. Potential new policies to helpmitigate, if not completely eliminate, current risks are recommended in this paper. The analysesof new operating procedures, reporting of safety incidents and training requirements along withpotentially advantageous changes are proposed in this paper.
