摘要

Over the past five years, research in our laboratory has been directed towards the development of a new theory of attention. Termed Malleable Attentional Resources Theory (MART), it posits that situations or tasks which induce mental underload can temporarily diminish the resource capacity of the operator. The empirical support for MART, and ramifications for existing theories, are reviewed in this paper. Previous research which could have been explained by MART is also considered. The paper then moves on to practical implications, concentrating on principles of design and how the knowledge uncovered here would impinge upon them. Finally, the paper concludes with thoughts for future research, and proposes that a shift in thinking is necessary for both theoretical and applied researchers in attention and workload.
