Police officers suffer personal attack and injury during routine patrol work, often by punches to the head causing linear and rotational accelerations, as well as bruising, laceration and fracture. Headwear subserves many functions, but in this context can be viewed as PPE. Few data exist about accelerations caused by punching, none in the context of police work. The types of punch used against officers 'on the street' were observed and reproduced in the laboratory. Volunteers struck an instrumented, model head. Combined (x, y & z) linear forces, depending on punch type, lead to accelerations of 181 g, giving a head injury criterion of 371, with the potential to cause rotation up to 4,500 rad.s~(-1). The latter has a high potential for damage. The possible protection factor for PPE in the patrol setting is discussed. Allowing a 10% margin, absorption to reduce linear accelerations by 75g (frontal) and 90g (lateral) is one possible design/test criterion.
