Despite all the recent initiatives that have tried to reduce the number of back injuries, back pain continues to be a major problem for NHS staff. This paper will detail through audit how, by providing continuing education, occupational health nurses can utilise current research to effectively monitor injured staff and triage them to appropriate treatments. The cost effectiveness of referral by occupation health nurses to private physiotherapy will be discussed. Consideration will also be given to managing workers who have persistent back problems and explore how a Back School can be used to educate staff into self-management of their problems.
