Research into visual warnings has found that their efficacy may be affected by variables such as signal word, colour, and the influence of others. The literature, however, has revealed little about what happens to warning perception and behaviour over time. The current investigation observed and recorded non-compliant behaviour of a target participant group who experienced repeated exposure to a visual warning where a hazard was not actually present. Two further signs were posted to attempt to dishabituate behaviour. The findings indicated effects of habituation and social influence. The implications of the findings and recommendations for further research are discussed.
