The aim of this paper is to correlate optical properties of powder coating based on β-hydroxyalkylamides (PRIMID™) with its curing behavior. β-Hydroxyalkylamide powder coatings system kinetics is difficult to follow by DSC or rheological measurements due to the water evolved during curing. We present a kinetic approach study of (β-Hydroxyalkylamide systems by dielectric analysis (DEA). Additionally, following the process of film formation by microscopy tools allow us to know the structure development during the curing process. The micro-textured effect is directly related to the macroscopic appearance of the cured paint: glossy, hazy or matte. Alternatively different types of finishing can be also obtained modifying the curing kinetics. Practical examples of β-Hydroxyalkylamide matte finishes are being compared.
