Traditional polyurethane powder coatings are less reactive than conventional TGIC, hybrid and epoxy powder coatings, but they are valued for their chemical and weathering resistances. With the right catalyst in a sophisticated formulation, however, a uretdione-crosslinked polyurethane coating can be a very reactive one. Recent work has shown that curing temperatures of 120℃ for these systems are possible. This paper describes the basic chemical principles of these uretdione systems; possibilities and limitations of such formulations, and the potential usage of these powder coatings in new application fields.
