First transient analyses of a small scale ADS with the SIMMER-MI code are presented. Three types of transient problems, i.e. beam trips, beam over currents and unprotected transient over power, are calculated. The beam trips do not have a direct severe effect on the safety, but they cause thermal stress loads, especially, on the pin. The calculations of beam over current transients show that no severe fuel melting problems are encountered. Within the range of a 20 to 100% increase of the source strength, no fuel melting will occur. The UTOP calculations reveal a sensitivity in the case where k_(eff) gets close to one, with the corresponding power increases according to the relation between power and source strength P ~ Q/(1-k). Any significant incidental reactivity addition must therefore be eliminated by design measures in the ADS.
