Next-generation military weapons systems are focused on developing 100 to 150 kW high-energy laser (HEL) weapons systems on tactical platforms. The majority of HEL systems utilize a chilled single-phase water coolant loop to remove the hundreds of kilowatts of waste heat generated by laser components. One major challenge facing the deployment of these HEL systems onto tactical platforms is the unattractive size, weight, and power (SWaP) of the chiller loop needed to keep the laser coolant cold. Chiller systems capable of rejecting the laser waste heat are themselves larger than the intended tactical platforms and consume too much power. Advanced cooling architectures will be necessary to transition these systems from laboratory demonstrations to tactical field-ready weapons systems.
