A family of laser diode arrays has been developed for quasi-continuous-wave (QCW) operation under the adverse environmental conditions common to military applications. The arrays contain expansion-matched heatsinks and hard solder, and are built using a process that minimizes the packaging-induced strain on the laser diode bars. The arrays are rated for operation in excess of 200 W per bar under normal operating conditions. Life test results are presented over a range of operating temperatures common to military specifications (-40 ℃ to + 70 ℃) at a power level of approximately 225 W/bar. Operation at the temperature extremes did not introduce any additional detectable failure mechanisms. Data is also included for a thermal (multicolor) pumping configurations that were chosen to maximize the effectiveness of the diode pumps over the temperature band. Data is also presented for a new family of laser diode arrays with bar-to-bar pitches of approximately 150μm. This new package, coupled with high-power QCW bars, enables peak power densities on the order of 180 W/mm~2.
