High-Brightness, Fiber-Coupled Lasers Enabled by Beam Combination of Diode Laser Bars

Beam combination of individual emitters of diode laser bars has the potential to dramatically improve the lateral axis beam parameter product (BPP). Unlike some other techniques, the vertical BPP of each diode laser is unaffected. This makes WBC appropriate for fiber coupling high-power stacks into fiber sizes typical for discrete single emitters. We have demonstrated nearly 150 W from an uncoated 100-μm core, 0.2-NA fiber, which represents an extremely high brightness level from a system based on diode laser bars. These results benefit from improvements in device design and packaging as well as advances in dielectric gratings and optical modeling. Preliminary data on power stability indicates that the grating is unaffected by the high intensity of CW light and no stringent temperature control is needed on the cooling water for the diode laser stacks.
